Karen
Crawford began her musical
journey at the age of six singing harmony with her father; Rolan, performing
for family and friends in her hometown of Tyler, TX. In the coming years,
she sang solos in church and at school backed by church and school choirs.
In 1980 she recorded her first single with Tyler’s
Johnny Cooper, on a song penned by Johnny called Cross Over To London.
In 1983 she joined the band Illusion, a hard rock band
with influences such as The Scorpions, and Motley Crew. This is when
she recorded the song Without You, written by Brian Boatman. The song
was in regular rotation on KTYL in Tyler, TX as well as surrounding
area radio stations. Karen developed a prominent following, providing
for her the opportunity to open for groups like Uriah Heep at The Oil
Palace.
While still living in Tyler, she recorded several TV
and radio jingles, and soon moved to Fort Worth where she began to work
with Rick Berkeley, Phil White, James Pennybaker, Bill Hamm (guitarist
for Sonny & Cher) and several other “A” players to form
a House Band called The Lynn Twinns. The band moved to a larger venue,
and changed their name to Thirty Something sharing the bill with Rick
Derringer.
In 1993, Karen teamed up with singer/guitarist Peggy
Taylor in a duo called Pretty Lies. They entertained some of their largest
audiences to date, as the supporting act for Chicago at the Starplex
Amphitheater in Dallas, TX.
During that same time, Karen added her haunting vocal
to the recurring dream sequence, on a soundtrack to the movie “Ghost
Bite”.
By October of 2001, Karen had moved to St. Louis, MO
where she began singing with an up-and-coming pianist named Michael
Perrine, in a duo called Preferred.
She then met singer/guitarist Scott Nienhaus (The Byrds, Nicolette Larson,
and Firefall), Terry Jones Rogers (The Byrds), and Pat Liston (Mama’s
Pride) with whom she is currently performing in duo, and trio situations.
She’s played with such names as Supe Granda of the Ozark Mountain
Daredevils, Michael Curtis of The Curtis Brothers, Crazy Horse and Hoyt
Axton, and Rusty Young of Poco as well.
Most recently, Karen, Scott Nienhaus & Terry Jones Rogers recorded
and submitted a cover of Keep On Tryin’ for a Poco Tribute CD
being produced on Paul Cotton’s label. This recording was accepted
and CD is being pressed and should be out before the end of 2007.
Karen Crawford, Scott Nienhaus, Terry Jones Rogers, John Mondin, John
Coatney, Paul Graves and Curt Sharkey have embarked on a new adventure
in a Crosby Stills & Nash Tribute Band called 4 And 20. This is
a very exciting venture and we expect to be out and performing by early
2008.
